The only concern with my physical was that my doctor said my prostate was a little bit enlarged. She said it's only a concern when having to get up 5 or 6 times in the middle of the night to pee or when a person has trouble forcing urine out. Hell, I can shoot across the room so no problem.

I figured I would post these blood test results since C-LO posted his earlier. The only indicator that was of concern was my HDL cholesterol. HDL is the type of cholesterol that carries cholesterol from the arteries back to the liver.

Since I don't have high total cholesterol readings it isn't all that bad. My doctor suggested that I exercise more which is what I was planning to do anyway since I sit around a lot. I walk for 20 minutes every night so I didn't feel that was enough. Now I'm going to do situps and pushups.

This is not a complete list. I left out things like red blood cell count and lymphocytes, all which were in normal parameters.

Blood pressure: 120/70

Cholesterol, Total: 144 ranges 125-200
Triglyceride: 125 range <150
HDL: 35 ranges >=40 <----LOW
LDL: 84 ranges <130

Sodium: 142 ranges 135-146
Potassium 4.1 ranges 3.5-5.3

Glucose: 95 ranges 65-99 (Toward the high level.)
bun: 13 Ranges 6-22
creatinine: 1.1 ranges 0.5-1.3
bun/creat ratio: 13 ranges 6-22
protein: 7.1 ranges 6.2-8.3

Hepatitis C: non-reactive
Hepatitis B: patient has immunity to hepatitis B virus

Chlamydia trachomatis: not detected
Neisseria Gonorrhoeae: not detected
RPR (DX) w/refl titer [Syphilis]: non-reactive
HIV 1/2 EIA antibody screen: non-reactive

I can't speak for you, but a whore like me needs a regular blood test.

:missingte

Good to hear you are getting them too. I hope you get regular physicals too so you'll be around for a while longer.

Looks like good results, QL.

Question: When you get your physical do they make you fast for 12 hrs or so prior to testing? Been awhile since I've had a physical, just can't take the fasting and then needles.

Yes. You have to fast for 10 hours I think. I get my physicals in the morning so it's easier to do this. I just don't have any coffee when I get up.

I know what you mean about the needles but they really have improved over the last 10 years. It's not like the needles they use to give plasma or to give blood. It's just a small needle that hurts for a second and then the pain goes away.

At what age did you start getting yearly checkups?

Age 6.

I had rheumatic fever in 1st grade which caused me to have a heart murmur due to a slightly damaged heart valve. I've always been careful to get checkups because of that. My Dad died of congestive heart failure 7 years ago so that's another reason to watch my health.

I ran in track and cross country in high school so it never really affected me except that occasionally I get a racing heart when I sleep. That only happens once every 5 to 10 years.

Recently the damage has lessened. My doctor said she can hardly hear the murmur. When I was a kid you could hear it pretty clearly.

I get echochardiograms of my heart every 4-5 years too. Thats' where they can do imaging of the heart to see how large the arteries are and if there is any danger of them clogging.

Thanks billsy.

My friend from grade school just lost his sister to a pancreatic disease. I hear about people all the time dying at my age. I wonder how many would have lived a lot longer had they had regular checkups.

Hey guys (and gals) you have to get a yearly checkup. My brother just died this past March due to gastrointestinal distress. He bled to death. We thought this was aggravated due to alcoholism but there may be additional factors.

I just had my yearly physical like I do every June and found out that my platelet level is lower than it should be. Platelets are those things in your blood that help it clot. Last year it was 197,000 and this year it's 111,000. The normal range is 130,000 - 420,000. So now I have to go back and find out why it's low. I'm wondering if my brother had the same thing I have and didn't get it checked out and his drinking made it worse.

I don't have any symptoms yet like easy bruising, blood in my urine or stool or easy bleeding elsewhere. In fact, I just had my teeth cleaned and didn't have any excessive bleeding. Knowing this early sure helps in finding out what the cause is.

I also plan to get a colonoscopy. You should get one if you have risk factors in your family or if you turn 50. I'll post the entire process here so as to de-mystify it for other people.

Anyway, here are the results of my tests:

Blood pressure: 120/70

Cholesterol, Total: 174 ranges 125-200
Triglyceride: 138 ranges 10-190
HDL: 30 ranges 30-88
LDL: 116 ranges 60-130

Sodium: 142 ranges 135-146
Potassium 4.8 ranges 3.5-5.3

Glucose: 109 ranges 73-113 (Toward the high level.)
bun: 16 Ranges 6-22
creatinine: 1.1 ranges 0.7-1.3
bun/creat ratio: 14.5 ranges 5-22
protein: 7.4 ranges 6.0-8.3
urine pH: 6.5 ranges 5-8
PSA: 0.52 ranges 0-4

platelets: 111 ranges 130-420

Hepatitis C: non-reactive
Hepatitis B: patient has immunity to hepatitis B virus

Chlamydia trachomatis: not detected
Neisseria Gonorrhoeae: not detected
RPR (DX) w/refl titer [Syphilis]: non-reactive

I have my doctor's recommendations right here on my desk at work. I'm going to give them a call this afternoon now that things at work have settled down.

Looking forward to talking to you about Vancouver.

Thanks for the advice mrhognuts2. I thought I was the only one who got aggravated at going to the doctor. I don't mind going once a year. But I've had surgery on my gums this last year and teeth cleanings every 3 months and now more blood tests and now a colonoscopy. After this, I need a break.

My friend who is my age just had a colonoscopy. He had 2 polyps. What is the story on these? I remember President Reagan had polyps too. Are they mostly harmless? Can they be an indicator of something bad?

This is good to have this discussion to find these things out.

Just got the results of my STD tests back. I was concerned because the HIV virus can cause platelet loss so I was afraid HIV might be the cause for my low platelet results.

my limited understandin is that polyps are similar to sun spots..benign and cancerous.....when i was told that i had 15,it scared the shit out of me.... guess the deal is catchin them early.......in my case, mostly harmless would be an accurate statement......buut,its that 1 in whatever that kills us............would like to hear from somebody who knows more about this than me........its very sad when friends die just because they wouldnt go for a checkup....'keep the continue'
